Additionnal Information

Adriaen was born in Amsterdam in 1636. He was the son of the well-known marine painter Willem van the Velde the Elder and brother of equally successful marine painter Willem van de Velde the Younger.

Adriaen initially studied with his father. However, not wishing to follow in the family tradition of marine painting, he continued his study in the workshop of Haarlem based landscape painter Jan Wynants. There he became acquainted with the work of Philips Wouwerman an Paulus Potter, both animal painters who were to have a profound influence on his work.

Van de Velde's career blossomed and he became one of the foremost landscape artists in the Dutch Republic. He collaborated with other artists in Amsterdam such as Meindert Hobbema, Philips Koninck, Adriaen Verboom and others, typically adding the figures or animals to their paintings.

The typical style and composition of the present painting may be usefully compared to other works by Van de Velde dating from the early 1660s, such as that dated 1662, in the Musée du Louvre, Paris and  in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
